Digestive System Final Project

Digest3

Basic Functions of The Digestive System Is:

The oral cavity allows food to enter the digestive tract and have mastication (chewing) occurs , and the resulting food bolus is swallowed.

The lips and cheekd help keep food between the teeth when being chewed

The pharynx receives the food after being swallowed.

The epiglottis is to prevent food and drink from falling down the airway.

The stomach is the storage of food.

The cardiac sphincter controls the passage from the esophagus into the stomach; sphincter muscles normally limit passage to one direction.

The pyloric sphincter controls the passage from the stomach into the duodenum.

The liver is to process and remove toxins from the blood.

The gallbladder is the storage of bile salts that the liver produces.

The pancreas breaks down protein, carbohydrates and fats with its own digestive juices.

The small intestines breaks down food using enzymes released by the pancreas and bile from the liver.

The large intestines is responsible for processing waste so that emptying the bowels is easy and convenient.

The rectum is to act as a temporary storage site for fecal matter before it is eliminated from the body through the anal canal.

The anus lets out the feces (waste) that has been in the rectum for a while.

The Major Organs of the Digestive System is:

Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines.

2 Diseases:

Colitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and is associated with diarrhea, pain, and blood in the stool. The colon is a hollow, muscular tube that receives products of digestion from the small intestine and ultimately eliminates them from the body through the anus. When a patient complains of pain and diarrhea with or without bloody stool, it is important to diagnose the type of colitis since treatments are different for the different types of colitis.Inflammation of the colon causes the muscle layers to go into intermittent spasm and cause cramp-like pain, which is pain that comes and goes. The treatment of colitis depends on the cause.

Crohn’s disease is a lifelong inflammatory bowel disease.Parts of the digestive system get swollen and have deep sores called ulcers. Crohn’s disease usually is found in the last part of the small intestine and the first part of the large intestine. But it can develop anywhere in the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. You may get it when the body’simmune system has an abnormal response to normal bacteria in your intestine. The main symptoms of Crohn’s disease are belly pain and diarrhea (sometimes with blood). Losing weightwithout trying is another common sign.Your treatment will depend on the type of symptoms you have and how bad they are.

Keep Healthy:

People could eat lots of fibre-rich foods, chew your food properly, avoid foods that may upset your stomach, keep the body active.Fibre promotes healthy digestion by helping to remove waste from your body.Regular physical activity helps keep food moving through your digestive system. With convenient take-away foods, highly processed and refined low fiber meals, sugar and preservatives laded snacks.Try drinking a glass of lukewarm water in the morning to jump start your digestive system and continue to hydrate regularly throughout the day.
